MD/MS-General Practice and Emergency Medicine (MDGP)

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

On completion of the MDGP, the trainee will be able to meet objectives related to clinical, preventive/community health, managerial, training, communication and professional performance.

Objectives related to clinical performance:

The resident will be able to:

1. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all common and derious health problems and manage them completely.
2. Diagnose health problems on the basis of information collected from patient, relative physical examination and available diagnostic procedures and facilities.
3. Provide effective and appropriate medical and surgical management for health problems in the context of the resources available.

Objectives related to preventive/ community health performance:

The resident will be able to:

1. Co-ordinate and implement health promotion and disease prevention activities;
2. Demonstrate a through knowledge of major health problems facing people in the district she/he is working;
3. Develop the staff of the health posts with clinical administrative and health promotional support and training.
4. Visit the health post regularly or as required.

Objectives related to managerial performance

The resident will be able to effectively manage the staff and carry out administrative responsibilities of the hospital.

Objectives related to training

The resident will be able to

1. Arrange and/or conduct appropriate in service training for hospital staff and others.
2. Provide appropriate education or training to various levels of health care students assigned to the hospital.

Objectives related to communication

The resident will be able to:

1. Establish effective referral system.
2. Develop and co-ordinate effective communication and co-operation amongst all health care services (both governmental and non governmental)
3. Develop and maintain effective support for the health posts.

Objectives related to professional Performance

The resident will:

1. Maintain current knowledge of health care problems through participation in appropriate continuing health education programmes.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of and consistently within the health care objectives of the government.
3. Maintain personal and professional standards consistent with his role as a lader in health care term.
4. These objectives attempt to address the needs of people in Nepal and may be accomplished in a number of ways. The IOM has developed the MD (GP) programme to address these objectives in a specific way using a definition of General Practice which will differ from that in other countries at other centres.
